Within the past month, six “Oscar worthy, critically acclaimed films” have been released: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Call Me By Your Name, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Justice League, The Disaster Artist, and Lady Bird. Of these, Three Billboards seems to have attracted the most attention. A film directed by Martin McDonagh and starring Frances McDormand, Three Billboards tells the story of a mourning mother finding her way in the world while aggressively encouraging her town’s police department to continue pursuing her daughter’s murderer by means of three large billboards with harsh criticisms of their work thus far. Frances McDormand has previously played Detective Marge Gunderson in the Coen Brothers’ Fargo, so playing the violent, rebellious lead character was a major change that McDormand took on well. The character, much due to McDormand’s Oscar winning acting abilities, was incredibly successful; both the anger and deeply-rooted sadness came through in the tragic story and it will likely lead to her second best actress award for her this year. Sam Rockwell, as the moronic police officer, made the story not only one of the acceptance of death, but one of redeeming oneself in the face of embarrassment. Best film of the year. 4.8/5☆
